INBDE Test Day Checklist: What to Bring and What to Expect
The INBDE runs across two days at the same Prometric center. Bring matching IDs, follow banned-item rules, take scheduled breaks, and expect results in about 3-4 weeks.

INBDE Test Day Checklist: What to Bring and What to Expect
Test day is mostly logistics. The more you rehearse the routine, the less mental bandwidth it steals from the exam. A missed ID mismatch, a forgotten locker rule, or a disrupted break can cost more than a difficult question. We have seen students lose attempts because of a name mismatch or a banned item in a pocket. Do not let that be you. The students who arrive prepared protect their focus for the 500 items ahead.
Two Days at the Same Center
Day 2 must occur at the same Prometric center as Day 1, within 7 days of Day 1. If you miss that window, you retest at your own expense. The strongest repeated student advice is to schedule the two days back-to-back.
Back-to-back days reduce travel stress and prevent the psychological drift that can happen during a long gap. They also match the advice not to study between days. If your center cannot offer consecutive days, choose the closest pair within the window and treat the gap as a light-review day.
ID and Name Rules
You need two forms of identification: a primary government-issued photo ID with signature and a secondary ID with your name and signature. The name on your IDs must exactly match your DENTPIN and application. Corrections require at least 10 business days.
Name-match issues are one of the most common administrative pitfalls, especially for international candidates with multi-surname or patronymic conventions. Check your DENTPIN, ECE report, and government ID together at least two weeks before the exam. If anything does not match, start the correction process immediately. Prometric will not make exceptions at the door.
What to Bring
- Your exam confirmation
- Two matching IDs
- Center-approved personal earplugs (confirm with the center ahead of time)
- Layered clothing
- Snacks and water for the locker
- A clear bag or wallet that fits locker rules
Print your confirmation the day before and verify the center address and start time. Some centers have moved or changed hours, so do not rely on memory. Confirm parking or transit options as well. A small logistical mistake can become a major source of stress on test day.
Pack the night before. Place your IDs and confirmation in a specific pocket so you do not have to search for them. Dress in layers because center temperatures vary. Bring a water bottle that fits in the locker. Do not bring notes, study materials, or anything that could be flagged as a banned item.
Banned Items and Locker Rules
Phones, smartwatches, notes, and study materials must stay in the locker. Locker access is restricted during unscheduled breaks. Leave valuables at home.
Jewelry and watches may also be restricted depending on the center. Keep your testing-day accessories simple. The less you bring, the less you have to worry about. If you are unsure whether an item is allowed, call the center ahead of time or leave it at home.
Breaks, Food, and Caffeine
Take the scheduled breaks. Eat light food such as nuts, granola, or a banana. Use your normal caffeine routine; do not experiment with energy drinks. Do not study during breaks. The 1-2 questions you might gain cost more focus than they are worth.
Step outside if the center allows it. Stretch, walk, and reset your eyes. Avoid conversations with other test-takers about questions. The emotional tone of a break can affect your next section. Protect your focus by keeping the break low-key.
Incident Protocol
If a noise event, equipment issue, or other irregularity occurs, document it in writing immediately and report it within the 5-business-day window. Prometric will investigate, but results are not appealable.
Tell the test center staff right away. Ask for an incident report number or a written record. If the issue affected your concentration, request that the report be filed. The 5-business-day window is strict, so do not wait until after you see your results.
Results Window
Official results arrive in about 3-4 weeks via your DENTPIN portal. Pass shows one word; fail shows your overall scale score and a 13-area performance profile. There is no unofficial score at the test center.
Results are not emailed reliably. Check the DENTPIN portal daily starting around 2.5 weeks after your test date. If you pass, the report will show only the word Pass. If you do not pass, the report will include your overall scale score and a performance profile across the three clinical content sections and the 10 foundation knowledge areas. Use that profile to guide your retake prep.
The Night Before and Morning Routine
The night before Day 1 is not the time to learn new content. Do a light review of your error log or flashcards, then stop. Prepare your bag, set two alarms, and go to bed early. The quality of your sleep matters more than the extra hour of studying.
On the morning of the exam, follow your rehearsed routine. Eat the same breakfast, wear the same layers, and leave earlier than you think you need to. Arrive 15-30 minutes before check-in. Use the restroom, check your pockets for banned items, and take a few slow breaths before you enter the testing room.
What to Expect at Check-In
Arrive early and follow the check-in line. The staff will verify your IDs, take a photograph, and provide locker instructions. You will sign a confidentiality agreement and receive a laminated noteboard or marker. Listen carefully to the rules. If you have questions, ask before you enter the testing room.
You may be asked to roll up sleeves, empty pockets, or turn out glasses. These are standard security checks. The staff are not trying to intimidate you; they are following a protocol. Cooperate quickly and return to your routine. The less friction you feel at check-in, the faster you can settle into the exam.
Test Center Environment and Etiquette
Prometric centers vary in size, noise level, and temperature. Some students are disturbed by keyboard clicks or chair movement. Center-approved personal earplugs can help, but you must confirm with the center ahead of time. If you are sensitive to noise, consider the paid Prometric Test Drive to experience the environment before the exam.
If a noise event occurs during your exam, do not suffer in silence. Raise your hand and report it. Document the incident in writing immediately after the section. The 5-business-day reporting window is strict, and a same-day report is always stronger than a later complaint.
Reschedule and Cancellation Rules
Reschedule or cancel fees depend on how far in advance you act. Prometric charges $50 at 30+ business days, $70 at 5-29 business days, $150 at 1-4 business days, and the full fee for no-show or 30+ minutes late. You must act at least 24 hours ahead; local centers cannot reschedule.
If you feel genuinely unready, reschedule rather than sit for a bad attempt. A visible failed attempt stays on your record indefinitely and is reported to boards and schools.
Travel and Backup Plans
Have a backup plan for traffic, transit delays, or parking issues. If you are traveling to the center, book accommodations close enough that a delay will not make you late. A no-show or arrival 30+ minutes late forfeits the full fee.
International candidates should confirm visa timing, travel logistics, and the 6-month eligibility window before booking flights. Prometric centers are only in the United States, territories, and Canada. A visa delay can burn the window and the exam fee.
After the Exam
After Day 2, there is no unofficial score. Do not try to calculate your performance from the number of questions you remember. The feeling of failure is common and unreliable. Many students who felt certain they failed still received a Pass. Trust the process and wait for the official results.
Retake Planning if Needed
If you do not pass, you must wait at least 60 days before a retake and you are limited to 4 attempts in any 12-month period. There is also a 5-year, 5-attempt rule. Review your 13-area performance profile and rebuild your plan with more question-based prep and full-length simulations. A retake with the same method is the documented failure pattern.
If you want a platform to rehearse the full two-day experience before your real test, Crack the Dental Boards offers 6+ full-length two-day mock exams. We built them because we were tired of watching students discover stamina gaps on test day instead of during practice. The AI tools can also help you debrief missed items and build a targeted review plan for the final days.
Arrive prepared, match your ID names exactly, follow the center's banned-item rules, and protect your focus during breaks. The INBDE is a two-day event, so rehearse the entire routine beforehand. The students who walk into the center relaxed are usually the ones who have rehearsed every detail at least once.
